With the new season of Indian Premier League just around the corner, and not long to go before practice begins, a few franchises have begun making changes in their squads due to injuries to key players. Recently, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad announced new replacement signings to their squads.
Kolkata Knight Riders, on their part, announced the signing of left-arm pacer Saurabh Dubey as a replacement for Akash Deep. Indian pacer Akash Deep has been ruled out for the 2026 season with a lumbar stress injury and will undergo rehabilitation under the guidance of the medical team at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Akash Deep, who the country already has represented in Test cricket, hailed as a steady pacer. He has played 10 Test matches in his international career till now and taken 28 wickets. His non-appearance in the tournament is a blow to the Kolkata franchise, which was looking to use his bowling strength throughout the season.
In a bid to fill this hole, KKR has signed Saurabh Dubey for INR 30 lakh. His left-arm pace makes him a different option in the bowling department. He may not have much experience at the IPL level but will be backed by the team management to do well if given the chance.
Sunrisers Hyderabad also made an announcement of a replacement signing as well. The franchise confirmed that English pacer David Payne will replace Jack Edwards, who has been ruled out due to injury. Recruited for INR 1.5 crore, Payne is a seasoned T20 cricketer.
David Payne represents England in international cricket and is best known for his performances in the shorter format of the game. He has played more than 200 T20 matches and claimed over 300 wickets in the format over the years. This amount of experience may come in handy for the Sunrisers Hyderabad looking to bolster their bowling attack for the season.
Both announcements underlined the need for IPL teams to remain adaptive and ready to tackle sudden situations like injuries. The replacements have an important role to play in keeping the team balanced and making sure that they stay competitive until the end of the tournament.
With the countdown to IPL 2026 officially ticking off, it will be interesting to see how these freshly inducted players fare and whether they can bring a notable impact on their sides.
